The first firemen Day was held in 1999 when five firemen tragically perished fighting a wildfire in Australia when the wind unexpectedly shifted and enveloped them in flames. It is observed on May 4th since that day is Saint Florian’s Day. Saint Florian is the patron saint of firefighters and is credited with being one of the first commanding firemen of a real Roman unit.
