Charles Darwin was an English naturalist whose scientific theory of evolution through natural selection laid the groundwork for modern evolutionary studies. On February 12, 2022, the world will celebrate Darwin Day. Charles Darwin’s birthday is celebrated as Darwin Day on February 12 of each year, which is also the date that Darwin Day is honoured. He was born on February 12th, 1809 in the town of Shrewsbury, which is located in the county of Shropshire, England. There are two names for Darwin Day: Darwin Day and International Darwin Day. This day celebrates the contributions that Charles Darwin made to the scientific community as well as the advancement of science in general.
The Origins of Darwin Day: History
An annual Darwin Day event was first organised at the University of Tennessee in 1997 by Massimo Pigliucci, Amanda Chesworth, and Dr. Robert Stephens. In 2000, Amanda Chesworth and Dr. Robert Stephens joined forces in New Mexico to formally incorporate the Darwin Day Program. Dr. Robert Stephens was the driving force behind the celebration of Darwin Day. In 1995, he encouraged the Humanist community in Silicon Valley to begin celebrating Darwin Day on an annual basis.
